Sex: The Brain-Body Connection

The human body is one complex machine, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that your sexual response is just as complicated. A recent survey revealed that more than half of women didn’t know that the brain is the most important sexual organ. Do you consider yourself one of these women? Are you interested in learning more about the brain’s role in your sex drive?

Many times we focus on the physical aspect of sex without realizing the complexity of the mental aspect. For many women, the first step towards becoming intimate is experiencing sexual desire—a process that starts with the brain.

Not only is it the center of your thoughts and emotions, but the brain is home to important chemicals, called neurotran- smitters and hormones, that are thought to play a role in the dynamic process of female sexual response. Some of these chemicals serve to excite and stimulate the body while others inhibit sexual response. Interestingly, sexual desire is thought to involve a specific area of the brain called the hypothalamus and includes activation of a neurotransmitter called dopamine.

As you can see, the relationship between sexual desire and the brain is a complex one. So what does this mean if you’re experiencing a lack of desire?
