Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD)

HSDD, a type of female sexual dysfunction, is a persistent or recurrent decrease or lack of sexual desire that causes distress for the women, may put a strain on her relationship with her partner, and is not due to the effects of a substance, including medications, or another medical condition.

While the exact causes of HSDD are unknown, it is thought that some of the neurotransmitters in the brain that play a role in sexual response may be affected in women with HSDD.

Although health care professionals are still working to understand the causes of HSDD, they can assess the condition by taking a careful health history and by using a standardized questionnaire to diagnose HSDD in patients. There are no FDA-approved prescription medications in the United States to treat HSDD.

If you think you may be experiencing HSDD, or another form of sexual dysfunction, talk to your health care professional. He or she may be able to identify potential causes and determine the best treatment regimen for you. Fortunately, many sexual health issues can be successfully addressed through education, lifestyle changes, counseling and professional care.
